Staying happy and healthy throughout this trying time is essential. But as gyms are shut it can be hard to get motivated, surrounded by your home comforts and family members. Keeping up with your workout regime, or starting a new one, doesn’t have to involve expensive equipment. So, to help you out, we’ve found 13 creative home exercises that anyone can do whilst working from home over the next few weeks and beyond.

First and foremost, prevent injury and make your home workout more effective by following this easy warm-up routine from the NHS.

Creative home exercises for beginners

The following exercises focus on the main areas to work on; upper body, lower body, the core, cardio and flexibility.

Arms, shoulders & upper back

Find a sturdy chair and begin with the triceps dip exercise. Place your hands on the edge of the chair seat, shoulder-width apart, slide your bottom off the chair and with straightened arms hold yourself up. Keeping your back close to the chair, slowly bend your elbows and steadily dip as low as you can go. Return to your starting position and repeat 10-20 times.

Once you’ve got this mastered, have a go at these:

Lower body & core

Perfect for the lower body and the core, all you need is a solid wall to complete this one. Begin in an elevated position, lift up through the pelvis and straighten each leg one at a time whilst pushing your feet against the wall. Using your core to hold your body up, keeping your body in a straight line throughout. Steadily walk your feet down into the bridge position and repeat 10 times.
